“I don’t mind going out,” Jimothy said, frowning just a little. He sensed there was more to this than what was on the surface. “What are you doing?”

“Nothing,” said Ricky, and Jimothy knew he was lying.

“Bullshit. What are you doing?” he repeated.

“Look,” the lanfis tried another tactic. “Do you really want to go wandering around the city looking for these people? I mean, physically do you really feel up to it?”

“I’ll manage,” he insisted. Then he yawned again and tried to focus on Ricky, but the lanfis was looking distinctly fuzzy.

“No, you won’t. The Sisters would tell you the same. You need a day to heal before you start Wand’ring again, even just around the block.” Ricky’s expression grew guilty and apologetic at once. “That’s why I put some medicine in your tea.”

“You—?” But he was interrupted by another huge yawn.

“I’m awful, I know. And I’m sorry. I had to.”

The lanfis rose and moved to Jimothy, who swayed a little in his seat despite all his attempts to stay upright. “You…prick,” he muttered as Ricky caught him before he could fall.

“I am,” he agreed, half carrying Jimothy to the bed. He used one hand to push the blankets out the way. “I’m an utter prick and I tricked you.” He helped Jimothy into the bed and pulled the covers up over him.

“Damn you.” But the curse lacked conviction. Unable to stay awake any longer, Jimothy fell into a deep, heavy sleep.
